Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, the national sport of South Korea, and the most popular martial art in the world, with a strong presence in the UK. It has been an Olympic sport since 2000.
In Korean, Tae means “to strike or break with foot”; kwon means “to strike or break with fist”; and do is the “way” or “method”. Thus, Taekwondo may be loosely translated as “the way of the hand and the foot”. There is a general emphasis on kicking techniques, employing the leg’s greater reach and power compared to the arm. There are also traditional parts of the art involving kicking, punching and blocking, and as a club we incorporate self defence into some of our sessions.
